Carlo Crocco, nephew of the founder of Binda, a company
that is still a cornerstone of the watch industry in Italy,
founded his own watch company in Switzerland. Crocco named his new
company MDM, which stands for Marie Daniele Montres, after his wife,
although other interpretations have surfaced. MDM is the firm that then
created the product line named Hublot.
In the late 1970's gold
watches were always fitted with a matching bracelet, it was this that
allowed Crocco his idea which would set the Hublot apart from other
watches of it's time. At the time watches were designed by hand, without
the help of computers, and
when the case was designed a black strip was placed where the bracelet
would normally be. It occurred to Crocco to leave the black strip, but he
did not wish to use the usual leather strap. He thought that, perhaps,
it could be a strip of rubber. Everyone from his family, and even the
suppliers, thought Crocco was crazy, but today the rubber strap, now
cleverly scented with vanilla, is still a defining trait of the Hublot
line today.
